I Tested Four Waterproof Mascaras In A Chicago Rainstorm
Chicago weather has a talent for ruining a carefully finished face. A morning that begins with pale sunshine can turn into cold rain, gusts, and damp sidewalks before lunchtime. Mascara is often the first product to reveal whether a beauty routine is genuinely long-wearing or simply advertised that way.
I put four waterproof mascaras through a real Chicago rainstorm to see how they handled wet lashes, watery eyes, humidity, and several hours of wear. The test included two luxury formulas, one mid-range favorite, and one drugstore option, with attention to more than whether the mascara technically stayed black.
I looked at curl retention, volume, flaking, smudging, comfort, removal, and the condition of my lashes at the end of the day. The goal was a practical comparison for anyone who wants reliable eye makeup rather than a formula that performs only under controlled indoor conditions.
The Test Setup
I selected four mascaras with different promises and brush designs: Lancôme Lash Idôle Waterproof, Dior Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Waterproof, Clinique High Impact Waterproof Mascara, and Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Waterproof. All four were black shades, and I used freshly opened tubes so that an almost-dry formula would not influence the results.
To keep the comparison fair, I curled my lashes with the same lash curler and applied two coats to each eye. I did not use eyeshadow primer, setting spray, tubing mascara underneath, or a second product to reinforce the roots. My skincare and base makeup stayed consistent, although I kept the rest of my eye makeup minimal so that any transfer would be easy to identify.
The rain arrived late in the morning with a steady drizzle that became heavier during a walk and an errand run. The temperature hovered in the low 50s, and the wind made my eyes water several times. I checked the mascara after application, after the outdoor portion, around lunchtime, and again in the evening before removal.
That kind of real-world testing is central to Bronzer Bunny, where product performance matters just as much as packaging or a luxurious first impression. A mascara can look beautiful in a mirror and still fail when exposed to weather, tears, or a long workday.
The Four Formulas
Lancôme Lash Idôle Waterproof gave the most separated, lifted look at the start. Its curved elastomer brush reached the shorter lashes near the inner corner without depositing too much product, while the tapered tip made the outer lashes easy to define. Two coats produced length and a neat fan rather than dramatic thickness.
Dior Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Waterproof created the fullest appearance immediately. Its curved brush added density at the roots and gave my lashes a bold, polished shape. The formula felt slightly wetter than the Lancôme option, so I needed to wait a few seconds between coats to prevent the ends from sticking together.
Clinique High Impact Waterproof Mascara had the simplest application. The traditional brush coated every lash quickly and built noticeable volume with one coat. A second coat made the lashes darker and thicker, although it was less precise than the two curved brushes. This was the formula that looked most traditionally “mascara-like” in a flattering, everyday way.
Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Waterproof was the lightest-feeling option. Its flexible brush stretched the lashes and gave excellent length, but it required more careful layering for volume. The final effect was defined and fluttery, with less of the dense, false-lash appearance created by Dior and Clinique.
What Happened In The Rain
The first fifteen minutes outdoors did not separate the mascaras dramatically. All four stayed dark, and none dissolved or visibly ran down my cheeks. The differences appeared after the rain continued and my eyes began to water in the wind.
Dior held the strongest curl and retained the most substantial volume. Its finish stayed impressively bold, but I noticed two tiny flakes beneath my right eye after several hours. Clinique remained intensely black and resisted moisture well, though the outer corners began to look slightly heavier as the day progressed.
Lancôme performed with the best balance of definition and durability. It did not create as much volume as Dior, yet it kept each lash separated and showed no obvious smudging. Maybelline also stayed clean at the lash line, although the lengthened tips lost a little of their upward shape after the wet walk.
| Mascara | Initial effect | Rain performance | Late-day appearance | Removal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lancôme Lash Idôle Waterproof | Lifted, separated length | No smudging or visible flakes | Clean and defined | Moderate effort |
| Dior Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Waterproof | Full volume and curl | Strong hold with minor flaking | Bold but slightly less fresh | Most difficult |
| Clinique High Impact Waterproof | Dense, classic volume | Very resistant to water | Slight outer-corner heaviness | Moderate effort |
| Maybelline Sky High Waterproof | Long, fluttery lashes | Clean but curl softened | Natural and slightly less lifted | Easiest of the four |
The most surprising result was how close the drugstore formula came to the luxury options in basic waterproof performance. Maybelline did not give the same dense finish as Dior, but it endured the rain without raccoon eyes. For a lightweight everyday look, that difference may matter less than the price gap.
Wear, Removal, And Comfort
Comfort became more important as the day went on. Dior felt the most noticeable on my lashes, especially after two coats. It was not irritating, but the formula had a firmer, more substantial feel. Clinique was also apparent, although its weight was easier to overlook because the lashes stayed soft enough when I blinked.
Lancôme felt the most comfortable overall. The lashes remained flexible, and the product did not make them feel brittle after exposure to cold air. Maybelline was similarly light, with a slightly drier finish that made it easy to forget I was wearing mascara.
Removal showed a clearer distinction between the four formulas. Dior required several passes with a bi-phase eye makeup remover and a saturated cotton pad. Rubbing was not necessary, but patience was. Clinique and Lancôme came away more easily after allowing the remover to sit on the lashes for about twenty seconds.
Maybelline removed with the least effort, though “easy” is relative when discussing waterproof mascara. I still used an oil-based remover and followed with a gentle cleanser around the eyes. None of the formulas caused lash loss during removal, but rushing the process would make tugging much more likely.
The Best Match For Each Need
For a polished office look or a day when I want my lashes to appear naturally lifted, Lancôme was the strongest choice. It delivered the most even combination of length, separation, curl, and weather resistance. The result looked refined rather than heavily made up, and it remained presentable after the rainstorm.
Dior won for high-impact volume. If the priority is a dramatic eye that stays curled through damp weather, it created the most impressive starting point and maintained that effect better than expected. The small amount of flaking kept it from being the overall winner, especially given its luxury price.
Clinique suited anyone who prefers classic volume without a complicated application technique. It made my lashes look darker and thicker quickly, and its resistance to rain was excellent. The brush was less forgiving around the inner corners, so I would use a smaller detail brush or wipe off a little excess before applying there.
Maybelline was the best value and the easiest recommendation for length-focused makeup. It performed well in the rain, felt comfortable, and removed with less struggle. Its main limitation was that the curl softened slightly, particularly on lashes that naturally point downward.
Shopping Priorities For Rainy Days
Waterproof mascara is not automatically the same as humidity-proof, tear-proof, or comfortable for twelve hours. The brush, application style, and natural lash pattern all affect the final result. Someone with straight lashes may value curl retention more than someone with naturally curled lashes, while sparse lashes may need a formula that builds volume without clumping.
Price also needs to be considered alongside performance. The luxury mascaras offered more elegant brush shapes, refined textures, and distinctive finishes, but the drugstore option handled the central challenge remarkably well. Paying more made sense for a particular aesthetic rather than because the expensive formulas were universally more durable.
For future rainy-day purchases, these are the qualities I would prioritize:
- Choose a curved brush when maintaining lift and curl is more important than maximum volume.
- Look for a flexible formula if your lashes feel stiff or brittle after waterproof mascara dries.
- Allow each coat to set briefly before adding another layer to reduce clumps and flakes.
- Use an oil-based or bi-phase remover and let it rest on the lashes before wiping.
- Judge value by the finish you want, since drugstore formulas can match luxury products in basic water resistance.
The biggest practical lesson is to avoid applying too much product at the roots. A heavy layer may look dramatic indoors, but it can become uncomfortable and increase flaking once the mascara is exposed to moisture. Two thin coats were more reliable than one thick coat with every formula I tested.
The Mascara I Would Pack Again
My overall winner was Lancôme Lash Idôle Waterproof because it maintained the most balanced result from morning through evening. It held up to a genuine downpour, kept the lashes separated, and remained comfortable enough for all-day wear. It also avoided the overly rigid look that some waterproof mascaras create.
Dior was my choice for the most dramatic lashes, while Maybelline was the smartest budget pick. Clinique landed between them as a dependable volume formula with excellent water resistance. None of the four was a failure, but each served a different makeup preference.
For my next wet-weather day, I would reach for Lancôme when I want a polished, lifted look and Maybelline when I want length without spending much. The test also confirmed that waterproof mascara is worth packing for Chicago forecasts, provided I bring a proper remover along with it.
