I Tested 5 Eyebrow Gels on Sparse Brows

Sparse brows can make a quick makeup routine surprisingly complicated. A pencil can define the shape, but it may leave brows looking drawn on. A clear gel can hold the hairs in place, yet it cannot fill empty patches. Tinted brow gels promise a faster solution: color, volume, and flexible hold in one small tube.

I tested five eyebrow gels over several weeks to see which formulas made my brows look genuinely fuller rather than simply darker. My brows are naturally fine, unevenly distributed, and especially thin toward the tails. I wanted visible dimension, believable hair-like texture, and enough hold to survive a full day of errands, indoor heating, and changing Midwest weather.

The best product depended on the look I wanted, but one formula consistently created the illusion of the most individual hairs. I also found that application technique mattered almost as much as the product itself. A volumizing brow mascara can make sparse arches look dense, but too much pigment quickly turns fine hairs into a solid block.

How I Tested Each Brow Gel

I tested Benefit Gimme Brow+, Kosas Air Brow, Glossier Boy Brow, NYX Thick It Stick It, and e.l.f. Wow Brow. These cover luxury, mid-range, and drugstore price points, with different brush shapes, pigment levels, and hold strengths. I wore each gel alone on clean brows before testing it over a small amount of pencil.

For every formula, I looked at five things: how much visible volume it added, whether it coated individual hairs, how evenly it filled gaps, how natural the finish looked, and how well it lasted. I also paid attention to flaking, stiffness, transfer, and whether the wand deposited too much product at the front of the brow.

My normal skincare routine can leave a little extra richness around the eye area during winter, so I tested the gels after my usual morning skincare routine, allowing moisturizer and sunscreen to settle first. This helped me judge realistic daily performance rather than testing on an unusually dry, makeup-ready base.

The Five Formulas Under Pressure

Benefit Gimme Brow+ gave the most immediate, polished fullness. Its tiny tapered brush reached short hairs near the inner brow and deposited enough pigment to make fine strands visible. It did not create dramatic laminated volume, but it made my existing brows look thicker and more groomed without obscuring their natural pattern.

Kosas Air Brow had the softest, most flexible finish. The formula brushed my hairs upward and added a fluffy appearance, especially at the fronts. It was comfortable and never felt crunchy, although the tint was subtle on my medium-brown brows. The result looked elegant, but it did not fill my barest areas as convincingly as Benefit or NYX.

Glossier Boy Brow created a fuller, brushed-up shape with a slightly waxier texture. The small brush was easy to control, and the formula gave my brow hairs body without making them feel stiff. Its strongest quality was shape: it made my brows appear lifted and intentionally styled. However, it added less visible color than I expected, so empty patches remained apparent.

NYX Thick It Stick It was the most dramatic of the group. The fiber-infused texture grabbed individual hairs and built noticeable density in a single pass. My brows looked darker, wider, and more populated, particularly through the center where I have several sparse spots. It required the most careful application, since excess product could collect at the roots and make the finish look heavy.

e.l.f. Wow Brow was the most straightforward everyday option. It added a mild tint, a little fiber, and enough hold to keep the shape tidy. The small spoolie made it easy to work through the brow, although it did not create as much fullness as the more powerful formulas. For someone who wants a subtle enhancement at an accessible price, it performed well.

Wear, Texture, and Hair-Like Dimension

The most convincing brow gel did not necessarily create the darkest brows. Hair-like fullness came from a combination of tint and texture. When the formula caught separate strands and made them visible against the skin, my brows appeared more populated. A flat wash of color could make a gap less noticeable, but it did not reproduce the look of real hairs.

NYX Thick It Stick It won this particular test because its fibers added the greatest sense of density. The formula made fine, nearly invisible hairs show up and gave the impression that more brow existed than actually did. Benefit Gimme Brow+ came very close, with a cleaner and more refined result that was easier to wear without checking a mirror.

Kosas Air Brow ranked highest for softness and comfort. It kept my brows flexible and created a feathery finish that worked beautifully with minimal makeup. Its weakness was staying power: by evening, the lifted shape had relaxed slightly, especially at the tail. The tint also looked gentler than the product’s volumizing claims suggested.

Glossier Boy Brow had reliable hold and a flattering waxy texture, but it behaved more like a styling pomade than a true sparse-brow filler. It is excellent for making existing brow hair look groomed and substantial. If the main concern is missing hair rather than unruly hair, it works best with a pencil or powder underneath.

Brow Gel Comparison

Brow gel Fullness Hair-like effect Hold Finish Best use
Benefit Gimme Brow+ High Very convincing Medium Natural and polished Fast, balanced definition
Kosas Air Brow Medium Soft and feathery Light to medium Flexible and fluffy Barely-there makeup
Glossier Boy Brow Medium Moderate Medium to strong Waxy and groomed Shape and texture
NYX Thick It Stick It Very high Highest Strong Bold and tinted Maximum density
e.l.f. Wow Brow Medium-low Subtle Medium Natural and understated Budget everyday wear

The price difference was noticeable, but performance did not follow a simple luxury-versus-drugstore pattern. NYX delivered the biggest visual transformation, while Benefit offered the most balanced combination of precision, realistic color, and ease. Kosas had the nicest lightweight feel, and e.l.f. was perfectly serviceable for a low-commitment routine.

Shade selection also changed the outcome. A brow gel that is too warm or too dark can make sparse brows look painted instead of fuller. For the most natural effect, I preferred a shade close to my brow hair or slightly lighter. A deeper shade worked when I wanted more definition, but I had to use a lighter hand at the front.

The Application Made the Difference

The biggest mistake with tinted brow mascara is starting with a fully loaded wand. I wiped one side of the spoolie against the tube before applying, then brushed the remaining product through the center and tail. Only after that did I use the leftover pigment at the inner brow, where a concentrated deposit can look harsh.

For the fullest result, I brushed against the direction of growth first. This coated the sides of the hairs and helped the fibers catch onto fine strands. I then brushed everything upward and slightly outward, following the natural shape instead of forcing every hair straight up. That two-direction technique created more visible thickness than a single upward pass.

On especially empty sections, I used a fine pencil to draw two or three tiny strokes before applying gel. The gel softened the pencil and connected those marks to my real brow hairs. This combination looked more realistic than repeatedly layering tinted gel, which eventually made the skin underneath too dark.

The brush size mattered as well. A small, tapered wand gave me control around the inner corners and helped separate hairs. Larger brushes were faster, but they could smear pigment beyond the brow line. Anyone with petite brows or a narrow arch will probably appreciate precision more than a large applicator.

Which Gel I Would Buy Again

Benefit Gimme Brow+ was my overall winner for sparse brows. It produced the most believable balance of color, texture, and structure, making my brows look naturally fuller without advertising that I was wearing a brow product. It also remained easy to use when I was rushing, which is important for a product intended to simplify a makeup routine.

NYX Thick It Stick It created the most hair visually. If the goal is maximum density and a bolder brow, it was the clear standout. I would choose it for a full makeup look, photographs, or any occasion when I wanted my brows to anchor the face. The trade-off was that it demanded more restraint and blending.

Kosas Air Brow was my favorite for a soft, modern finish. It suited days when I wanted fresh skin, cream blush, and brushed-up brows rather than obvious definition. Glossier Boy Brow was the best styling product of the five, particularly for holding a shape. e.l.f. Wow Brow earned its place as the easiest budget recommendation, though it could not match the fuller effect of the top two.

The finished look also depended on the rest of my makeup. A strong brow gel could overwhelm a very minimal face, while a soft formula disappeared beside full-coverage foundation and defined eyes. I found the most harmonious result by matching brow intensity to blush, mascara, and lip color rather than treating the brows as an isolated step.

Choosing Based on Your Brow Goal

There is no single best eyebrow gel for every sparse-brow routine. Someone with plenty of hair but weak hold needs a different formula from someone with thin tails and visible gaps. Fiber gels are particularly useful when fine hairs are present but hard to see. Tinted waxes are better for structure, while softer formulas suit dry skin or a fluffy makeup style.

For more visual examples of how brow texture changes a complete look, the blog’s beauty video library includes makeup demonstrations and face-of-the-day inspiration. Seeing a product move on real brows can be more useful than judging a swatch, especially when deciding whether a bold fiber formula will suit your preferred finish.

A good everyday routine can stay very simple: brush the hairs upward, add a small amount of gel to the sparse areas, and stop before the product begins to build on the skin. If the brows still need help, use a micro pencil only where necessary. This preserves the airy effect that makes a brow gel look like actual hair.

A Practical Sparse-Brow Shortlist

  • Choose Benefit Gimme Brow+ for the most natural combination of fullness, definition, and easy application.
  • Pick NYX Thick It Stick It when maximum density and visible fiber volume matter more than a barely-there finish.
  • Use Kosas Air Brow for flexible, fluffy brows that feel soft and pair well with minimal makeup.
  • Reach for Glossier Boy Brow when your priority is holding existing hairs in a groomed shape.
  • Try e.l.f. Wow Brow for an affordable tint and modest volume suitable for quick daily makeup.

Before buying, consider whether the missing volume comes from invisible fine hairs or genuinely bare skin. A volumizing gel can exaggerate what is already there, but it cannot fully replace a brow pencil in completely empty sections. The most realistic result usually comes from using the gel as the main product and adding only a few precise strokes where needed.

For travel, a brow gel is one of the easiest ways to reduce the number of products in a makeup bag. It can add color, shape, and polish without requiring a separate wax or powder, which is why it fits naturally into a compact routine like this capsule makeup bag.

If I were replacing one tube today, I would buy Benefit for dependable daily wear and keep NYX as the more dramatic option. Both made my sparse brows appear to contain more hair, but Benefit delivered the most believable result across different makeup looks and lighting. Browse the tested formulas, compare the finish you prefer, and give your brows a few careful upward strokes before deciding they need more than gel.
